What is ELDT?
ELDT is an acronym for Entry-Level Driver Training, a new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandate ensuring new drivers meet standard safety levels.
The ELDT is a national uniform benchmark established on Feb. 7, 2022, requiring all new CDL drivers to have the same level of safety skills no matter which state they are licensed or trained in.
The minimum training standards established by the FMCSA are outlined in 49 CFR 380 and apply to individuals applying for the first time to obtain a Class A or B CDL, upgrading their existing Class A or B CDL, or adding an endorsement to their CDL such as a passenger endorsement (P), school bus endorsement (S), or a hazardous materials endorsement (H).
Getting Your CDL with an ELDT Course
It’s vital for truck drivers to get the right ELDT training to maintain a high safety level while transporting freight or people, whether traveling one mile or one thousand miles.
The ELDT is designed to ensure all entry-level drivers receive the same quality and consistent safety training to meet ELDT safety standards before obtaining their CDL. The goal is to properly train a new generation of drivers in safety measurements to ensure roads are safer for everyone to travel.
Until now, CDL training requirements were regulated by each state, making safety standards inconsistent across the nation. With ELDT CDL training in place, commercial truck drivers are trained with the same standards and are proficient in required CDL skills.
Parts of ELDT Training Courses
ELDT training comes in two parts: theory and skills.
ELDT Theory Training
ELDT theory training is taught in the classroom or online via courses like ours. It provides new drivers with the knowledge and skills required to pass the theory assessment and demonstrate proficiency in safety regulations. To pass the theory assessment, students must score an 80 percent minimum. ELDT theory training must be completed before ELDT skills training can be taken.
ELDT Skills Training
ELDT skills training is taught behind the wheel. To qualify to take the CDL exam, you must receive behind-the-wheel training and get a professional trainer’s endorsement, stating you are proficient in the required CDL skills.
Things You Should Know About ELDT
To schedule skills, pre-trip, and road exams required to obtain your CDL, a training provider must first electronically report the completion of your ELDT training. This will be added to your driving record and can be used to prove you completed your ELDT training. We do this automatically when you complete our training courses. Paper copies are not accepted as proof of ELDT completion.
