What Is a CDL?
A CDL is required to operate large, heavy vehicles such as 18-wheelers, and semi-trucks; to transport hazardous materials in tankers, or any vehicle type; or to drive a school bus, a tour bus, or any type of vehicle with 15 passengers or more.
Taking on such a task as driving a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) is a big responsibility, and it requires special knowledge and skills. That’s why it is important for commercial vehicle drivers to get the right ELDT training (Entry Level Driver Training) from a professional truck driving school before hitting the road. Our online ELDT CDL courses will prepare you for behind-the-wheel training, and will get you started on the path to getting your CDL.
Which Type of CDL Do You Need?
There are several types of CDLs available, including Class A, Class B, and Class C. To determine which CDL type to pursue, consider these factors: vehicle type, the gross vehicle weight rating or GVWR, the cargo carried, and the number of passengers transported.
CDL A
A Class A CDL is required for operating vehicles with a combined GVWR of 26,001 lbs or more, provided that the towed vehicle (trailer) weight is over 10,000 lbs. This CDL allows you to drive tractor-trailers (big rigs, semis, 18-wheelers) tankers, flatbeds, livestock carriers, most class B and C vehicles, or a combination of trucks and trailers.
We offer an ELDT Class A CDL course to get you started towards getting your Class A CDL.
CDL B
A Class B CDL is required to operate single vehicles that aren’t hitched to trailers, such as commercial trucks with attached cabs and cargo areas that have a combined GVWR greater than 26,000 lbs, or trucks towing trailers weighing 10,000 lbs or less. With a Class B CDL, you can drive a straight truck, large bus, box truck, segmented bus, dump truck with a trailer, and some Class C vehicles (with proper endorsements).
Look to Online CDL Course for the Class B CDL training that you need.
Class C
A Class C license allows you to operate any vehicle with a GVWR less than 26,001 lbs, a vehicle towing a trailer weighing 10,000 lbs or less, or a vehicle transporting 15 passengers or more. Vehicles included are small commercial trucks and buses, etc.
Requirements to Obtain a CDL
The federal government regulates commercial driver’s license laws in the United States under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). However, while there are many requirements that are federally mandated, some states have other CDL requirements. To obtain a CDL, you must be at least 18 to drive in the state or 21 to drive interstate or to drive with hazardous materials.
You must be a US citizen or have a green card with permanent residency and already have a valid driver’s license with 1 to 2 years of driving experience (depending on the state) with no active revocations or suspensions in any state. A DOT medical examination is also required to ensure you are in good health and that you speak English.
